“So that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 3:10
There is nothing greater in this life than being known by the One who has created you. Intimately, intricately, the Lord God of the Universe knows every last detail about you. Hairs on the head (or lack thereof), height and weight, age – check, check, check, and check. But God is far more than a carnival midway barker guessing superficial details about you. He knows you. Inside and out, good habits and bad, who you love, why you love her, who you’ve helped, who you’ve avoided, He knows you better than you will ever know yourself. And He still loves you (a truth for which I am eternally grateful)!
The One who knows you so deeply invites you to also know Him. The cool, soothing water that ran down your head in Holy Baptism was your first invitation into a conversation that has changed your life forever (and when Christians talk about forever, we really mean forever!). Weekly He converses with you through the proclaimed and preached Word. You pray. He hears you and speaks back to you! (Go to church! Don’t deprive yourself of hearing the voice of God!) You know the Lord God, the Almighty One, the Maker of Everything. You know Him because (and only for this reason) He has chosen to reveal Himself to you. The more you explore your relationship with your Lord, the deeper it gets. The further you walk with Jesus, the further you want to walk (cf. John Lk 24:13-35). The more you strain to hear His voice, the louder He speaks to you.
The more you hear, the more you want to hear. The more that is revealed to you, the more you want to reveal to others. As the joy springs up within you (like a well that springs up to eternal life) it spills out of you and brightens the lives of those around you. That’s the manifold wisdom of God at work! The One who knows you inside and out; the One who is made known to you through His self-revelation; this is the One who makes Himself known through you to the world around you . . . and the world you cannot yet see.
Through the witness your words and actions and life gives of the Savior who has given you everything, the rulers of all places take note. Kings marvel. Angels rejoice. The forces that are unseen and attempt their daily attacks are kept at bay. You hold within yourself a powerful Word against which nothing can conquer.
So bring it on world! Bring darkness; we have Christ’s light! Bring despair; we have Christ’s promises. Bring unbelief; we have a Word that will rock you at your core. Bring doubt; we have faith that moves mountains. Bring yourself; we have Jesus Christ for you.
