Prideful Destruction

Pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall. Proverbs 16:18

Trash talk is a staple of major league sports. Before the game, during the game, and after the game. Players build themselves up with empty promises void of substance. Priding themselves on their ability to play the game well, many boast as if the victory was behind them. (Cf. 2007 18-1 New England Patriots) Pride comes before the fall.

Pointless are empty words, idle threats, and insignificant boasts. Prove it. Show it. Live it. That’s what Jesus did. He is God’s Son, but never once bragged about this fact. Never once used His great power for His own benefit. Never spoke a vacuous verb; if He said He would do something, you can stake your claim it would be done. Jesus spoke many important words – I love you; I forgive you; you are mine. Then He proved it. Forsaking no one, He endured the cross and death . . . for you!

Jesus, thank you for your love. Amen.
