Everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. The slave doesn’t remain in the house forever; the Son remains forever. If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. John 8:34-36
Samuel had a front row seat as his life slowly dissolved to addiction. From alcohol to drugs to whatever would keep the edge off; whatever would keep the actual world a little less real. Not until a nearly fatal accident did he finally realize he’d lost all semblance of control. He felt trapped. The harder he tried to free himself from addiction, the stronger its grip seemed to tighten around him.
At rock bottom, he cried for help. He stammered and struggled to pray for peace; for freedom. God listened. That moment began a new life for Samuel. He has been set free by the Son. Free to walk the most difficult, arduous road he’s ever been down. Free from the evil that had engulfed him. Free to live without addiction.
Jesus, set me free. Amen.
