A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. John 13:34
When a human ceases to do what he is created to do, he is defective, perhaps broken. You can readily see this when someone is sick – he cannot work quite as well as he’s used to. Humans, however, were created to do much more than simply walk, talk, eat, think, sleep, and work. We were specially created to love. It is in this area of humanity we see the clearest how broken we are.
Most people have no problem loving themselves, but that’s just where the problem begins. Looking out for “number one” means I care less about all the “number twos”. This is brokenness. In Christ alone is broken humanity restored. In Christ do we love. The command is not just to love; it is to love as Christ did, counting others more important than ourselves.
Jesus, fix my love. Amen.
