Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28
On Holy Saturday, the lifeless body of Jesus rested in a stranger’s tomb. The devastated and confused followers of this Rabbi sat behind locked doors, jumping at the slightest sound for fear the soldiers return. In their minds, all was lost. All was for not. Their lives were clearly in danger.
At the same time, Jesus had descended into hell to inform Satan his party was over. No longer would he wield his former influence. He’s judged and condemned by Jesus. Now all who come to Jesus find rest. All who are in Jesus’ flock no longer need fear the ancient, wicked foe. Jesus’ judgment is final.
Tomorrow we celebrate Jesus’ resurrection from the dead. Having sufficiently proclaimed His victory over sin, death, and the devil, Jesus Christ was raised from the dead, His formerly lifeless body bursting from the tomb. Then He went looking for you!
Jesus, give me rest. Amen.
