On this rock I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Matthew 16:18
It has become quite the trendy tagline to declare ourselves followers of Jesus, but not His church. Books like, “I Like Jesus but not the Church” have skyrocketed this fashionable feeling to the forefront of Christian consciousness. So strip away the church and what’s left? Jesus, right? Not exactly. Apparently Jesus cares a great deal about His church. So much so that He chooses to work through her, broken, splintered, and dirty as she often may appear.
Upon Peter’s confession of faith that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God, Jesus Christ has built His church. If you like Jesus but not His church, be advised. Jesus proclaims that it is within the safety of His church, under His fortitudinous protection, that the gates of hell will be broken. Outside Christ’s church can be rather dark and bleak.
Jesus, purify your church and protect your people. Amen.
