Joseph went up from Nazareth to Bethlehem to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. Luke 2:4-5 (paraphrased)
What takes a man so far from home? Joseph moved some eighty miles from his hometown. What happened to cause him to pack up and head north? Was he, like many today, looking for a second chance?
Regardless of his reason, Joseph found himself in Nazareth. A new place for a new start. And when he first saw Mary! Courting soon led to asking her hand in marriage. The breakdown in the process, however, was an unexpected pregnancy. His hopes for a new life quickly fell to ruin. Wanting to believe Mary’s story about an angel and God’s Son, Joseph tried to stay. Just as he was ready to call it quits – to hit the road once again – he too was visited by an angel. “It’ll be okay, Joseph. Take Mary to be your wife and protect the boy she bears.”
Jesus, thank you for second chances.
