Defensive for Jesus

When James and John saw it, they said, “Lord, do you want us to tell fire to come down from heaven and consume them?” Luke 9:54

To champion the cause of a friend is noble. A town obnoxiously rejected Jesus; James and John repudiated every last resident. Fiercely loyal to Jesus were these Sons of Thunder . The unwarranted disrespect shown by the townsfolk burned in their hearts so they wanted the town burned to the ground.

Jesus would have none of it. If He is rejected, so be it. On to the next town. On to fertile soil. On to people receptive to the hope He bore. Violence wasn’t necessary. Terrorism is a  tactic of the devil. You needn’t compel belief; the Truth of the Word captures and transforms. No James and John, fire and brimstone aren’t in the weather forecast today.

We’re not called to defend Jesus. We are called to proclaim Him! He can take care of Himself.

Jesus, forgive our defensiveness and teach us to proclaim you. Amen.
