“When Jesus knew that His hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end” (John 13:1).
Daily Lenten Reading: John 13:1-5
As some people approach death, their thoughts are not on themselves but on their loved ones. They are concerned about leaving everything in order for them. They want to know that their caregivers are also being cared for. They make a point of sharing their confidence in Jesus’ gift of eternal life, thereby witnessing to their survivors.
Less than 24 hours from His excruciating death, Jesus’ thoughts are not on Himself but on His loved ones. Jesus concerns Himself with leaving them an example of true love. He wants them to know about His continuing care and forgiveness by leaving them with a soul-feeding Supper. He leaves the disciples with a tangible witness of His love by stooping down to wash their feet.
Lord Jesus, thank You for washing away my sin and for loving me and thinking of me all the way to Your cross. Amen.
