Picking and Choosing Who We Love

If anyone says, “I love God”, and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. (1 John 4:20)

Because God loves you, your love for your neighbor . . . your brother is evident. Sure, you don’t see eye to eye on everything; what siblings do. But you still love each other. You’re still brothers/sisters. Tensions may flare, angry words may even be uttered, but you’re still family.

How often was Jesus even frustrated with His disciples. These were men He knew and cared deeply about. He loved them. Even when Peter spoke with satanic undertones, or John napped in the garden rather than kept patrol, or James wanting to summon heavenly fire. So often they lacked faith and understanding. They ultimately abandoned Jesus at His most difficult time. Still, they were family! Still He relinquished His life for them. Still He loved them.

Dear Jesus, you love me. Strengthen me to love my brother. Amen.
