“See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.” (1 John 3:1a)
Daily Lenten Reading: 1 John 1:1-3
Sometimes we speak as if every human being is “God’s child.” In a sense, this is true. Every human being is a precious creature of God, fearfully and wonderfully made. However, our shared human sinfulness amounts to a rejection of our Father and Creator – not unlike the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32). So it’s also true that in our sin, we ceased to be God’s children.
Yet even though we turned our backs on Him, God comes running after us! He wants to welcome His sinful human creatures back into His family. We are reconciled with the Father and forgiven through His Son. We are God’s children, through the love of the Father who sent His precious Son to bring us back into His family of faith.
Father, help us to recognize the kind of love You have given to us! Thank You for making us Your children in Christ. Amen.
