Rejoice in the Lord always, again I will say, rejoice! (Philippians 4:4)
Paul seems to be talking like one of those “morning people”. Like he woke up and decided the world was perfect and that nothing would stand in his way. He’s a bundle of joy and optimism! Isn’t it strange when we hear things like “rejoice always” we immediately think of reasons not to rejoice?
Rejoice. Be joyful. Joy.
This takes a miracle sometimes. This takes the active work of Jesus in our lives. How can we rejoice when our politics are in shambles? How can we rejoice when grandma is dying? How can we rejoice when _______________?
How? By the grace of Jesus alone. Paul lived neither a perfect nor an easy life. His joy was a choice. Rather than focus on all that was going wrong, he chose to rejoice in what could never go wrong: Jesus!
Lord Jesus, you have given me this day, these opportunities, my life . . . everything! I rejoice in you and thank you! Amen.
