The sacrifice enters

Daily Lenten Reading: Luke 19:28-40

“The whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, saying, ‘Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!'” (Luke 19:37b-38)

It’s Holy Week!  Each of the four Gospel gives us different details on the crowd’s reactions on that first day of Holy Week, known as “Palm Sunday.”  Luke describes how the people were applauding Jesus as a King, sent from the Lord of heaven!

For this short moment, Jesus does look somewhat like a King.  But Jesus didn’t come from heaven to earth to be a celebrity.  Jesus came in the name of the Lord to grant peace from heaven – peace made possible only by His sacrifice on Good Friday. The glory of His triumphant parade into Jerusalem faded almost immediately.  Jesus’ glory was about to be shown on a hill of execution, and at an empty garden tomb …

King Jesus, hear us as we pray this week, “Hosanna” – save us! Amen.
