“For if we have been united with Him in a death like His, we shall certainly be united with Him in a resurrection like His” (Romans 6:5).
(Daily Lenten Reading: Romans 6:3-5)
Seemingly unimportant things, like the tense of a verb, can actually matter a LOT! Throughout this passage, Paul repeatedly says “we have been …”. In other words, you didn’t do anything to be united to Christ’s death and burial and resurrection. All of this was done to you and for you by God. He is the active One, you’re the recipient.
What have you received in baptism? All the benefits of Christ’s suffering and death are yours! You’ve been washed clean! Your sins are gone and buried! You’ve been united with Christ Himself and clothed with His flawless record! In your Father’s sight, Christ’s perfect righteousness is yours! As God’s baptized child, you’re covered with your Savior and His salvation!
Jesus, as I remember Your death and resurrection in this Holy Week, remind me also of my baptism which has united me with You forever. Amen.
