The Passover Lamb

“I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer” (Luke 22:15).

(Daily Lenten Reading: Luke 22:14-22)

The Israelites celebrated festivals, offered sacrifices, and followed detailed laws, all of which shaped them as God’s people and set them apart. Why do these festivals and sacrifices and laws matter to us today? Because they pointed forward to Christ and are fulfilled in Christ!

At the original Passover, the Israelites painted their front door frames with the blood of unblemished lambs. It was their last night as the Egyptians’ slaves. The Israelites were protected by the blood of their lambs from the destruction God unleashed on all the firstborn of Egypt.

Jesus eagerly looked forward to eating the Passover meal with His friends.  As He shared the memorial meal with them, and then instituted the Lord’s Supper for the first time, little did the disciples realize that the Passover Lamb was the One serving them!

By the blood of the Lamb, you’ve been spared from the punishment you rightly deserve and you’ve been freed from the shackles of sin!

Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy on me and grant me Your peace. Amen.
