Christmas Joy (23)

Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. Psalm 51:12

What’s choking out your joyous Christmastime cheer? What’s different? What’s happened? The culprit may be a lost loved one, the absence of whom seems to drain the sublime from the celebration. Behind that hap-hap-happiest seasonal smile hides a dolor outlook on life. But why?

In a brave effort to keep everyone else’s spirits high, you “suck it up” and trudge through. This only hurts more. Convincing yourself no one understands, you drift further away. Perhaps it would be better to share it. Talk about what’s bothering you. The people in your life are there for you.

A good first step is talking to the Lord. Ask Him to restore your joy by renewing your spirit. He hears your prayer. He does it. Then talk to a trusted companion. Get it out on the table. Discussion doesn’t change reality, but it will change you! Merry Christmas.

Jesus, restore my joy and uphold me. Amen.

Renewal (18)

Be transformed by the renewal of your mind. Romans 12:2

Countless adults across our land-of-plenty carry empty hearts this time of year. Feeling as if life has raked them over the coals of the dying Christmas Eve fire, many find no joy in this season of celebration. Empty seats at the Christmas meal. Standing in line to fill out unemployment forms. Disturbing news from your doctor. Enough to suck the joy out of even the most optimistic outlook.

But why? Why should these things rule your life and ruin your joy? Jesus Christ has come into this world. Into your world. This is good news no matter what bad news gnaws at your thoughts. We belong to Jesus. No one can take that away. Our life goes well beyond this world. We are intimately connected with the One who has been raised from the dead and promises to do the same to us! Read this mind-renewing message again and rejoice in the Truth! Your belong to Jesus!

Jesus, renew my mind. Amen.
